Most Birdies in a Single Masters Tournament

The record for the most birdies made by a golfer during one Masters Tournament is 28. And the golfer who holds that record is the only one so far to make more than 25 birdies in a single Masters.

The record-holder is Jordan Spieth, who made 28 birdies during the 2015 Masters. Spieth won that Masters by four strokes with a final score of 18-under-par 270. That tied the then-Masters Tournament scoring record.

The List: Most Birdies in One Masters Tournament

  • 28 — Jordan Spieth, 2015 (won)
  • 25 — Phil Mickelson, 2001 (third place)
  • 25 — Xander Schauffele, 2019 (tied second)
  • 24 — Jose Maria Olazabal, 1991 (second place)
  • 24 — Tiger Woods, 2005 (won)
  • 24 — Justin Rose, 2015 (tied second)
  • 24 — Sungjae Im, 2020 (tied second)
  • 24 — Patrick Reed, 2020 (tied 10th)
It was Mickelson's record of 25 birdies that Spieth broke by making 28 in 2015. Mickelson was first to record 25 birdies in this event at the 2001 Masters. But Mickelson didn't win that year, and didn't even finish runner-up. He was third, three strokes behind winner Tiger Woods (David Duval was second).

Jose Maria Olazabal was the first golfer to record 24 birdies in a single Masters, doing so during the 1991 Masters. But like Mickelson, Olazabal did not win the Masters in which he set what was a tournament record at the time: Olazabal was second to Ian Woosnam that year.

And the first golfer who made 23 birdies in a single Masters was Seve Ballesteros in his 1980 victory.

Other birdie records for The Masters include these: Jack Nicklaus made the most career birdies, 506. Anthony Kim made the most birdies in a single round, 11 in the second round in 2009. And Steve Pate and Tiger Woods share the record for most consecutive birdies in one Masters round with seven each.
