Golf Courses With Most USGA Championships

Merion Golf Club during the Curtis Cup, one of the USGA championships the club has hosted

Being selected as the site of a USGA championship tournament is a major feather in the cap for any golf course. And the USGA has its favorites, certain clubs and courses to which the organization has returned many times. That's what this article is about: those golf courses that have hosted the most USGA championships.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) is the governing body of golf in the United States, and, along with the R&A, sets the rules of the game. It stages between 15 and 20 national championship tournaments each year, from the biggest (U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Women's Amateur) to some that don't get quite as much attention (Amateur Four-Balls, Mid-Amateurs). There are also the senior and junior USGA championships, and team events (Walker Cup, Curtis Cup).

The List: Most USGA Championships Hosted by a Club

This list will be updated periodically, and all of the clubs that appear on it are still in the mix today as potential (or common) USGA host sites. The list is current through the 2024 tournament season.

All golf courses that have hosted at least 10 USGA national championships are included.

  • 19 — Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania
  • 17 — The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts
  • 17 — Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania
  • 16 — Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey
  • 14 — Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California
  • 13 — Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina
  • 13 — Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York
  • 12 — Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois
  • 12 — Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Michigan
  • 11 — The Olympic Club in San Francisco, California
  • 10 — Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado
  • 10 — Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma
As this article is written, every one of these courses is already on the schedule for future USGA championships, so each course's number will be growing. Merion Golf Club will become the first club to host 20 USGA championships when it is the site of the 2026 U.S. Amateur.

Speaking of Merion (pictured above), the current record-holder at 19 USGA championships, this is the breakdown of those tournaments:

  • U.S. Open: 1934, 1950, 1971, 1981, 2013
  • U.S. Amateur: 1916, 1924, 1930, 1966, 1989, 2005
  • U.S. Women's Amateur: 1904, 1909, 1926, 1949
  • U.S. Girls Junior: 1998
  • Walker Cup: 2009
  • Curtis Cup: 1954, 2022
Merion has not yet been the site of the U.S. Women's Open, but is on the schedule to host its first in 2034. Merion also holds this record despite never having hosted a senior USGA championship, nor the Boys' Junior.

Oakmont and The Country Club (Brookline) share second place, as of this writing, with 17 tournaments each. For Oakmont, that number is comprised of nine U.S. Opens, six U.S. Amateurs and two U.S. Women's Opens. For The Country Club, its 17 USGA championships break down to six U.S. Amateurs, four U.S. Opens, three U.S. Women's Amateurs, two Walker Cups, and one each of the U.S. Junior Amateur and U.S. Girls' Junior.
