How to Play the Game Named Chairman (or In the Chair)

If you are the chairman of the golf hole, and you win that hole, you also win points from each of the other three players in your group. But before you can win those points, you first have to win the right to sit "in the chair."

The golf game named Chairman is also called In the Chair. It is a game for groups of four golfers (although it could be played by threesomes, too). Net scores (you'll be employing handicaps, in other words) are used in Chairman to level the playing field.

In Chairman, the first golfer who wins a hole outright with the lowest net score earns the title of "chairman" on the next hole. Let's say Golfer A wins Hole 1 with a net score of 3. That makes Golfer A the chairman on Hole 2.

Now, on Hole 2, if Golfer A wins that hole while holding the chairman title, he earns one point from each of the other golfers. If anyone else ties the Chairman on that hole, no points are awarded but the Chairman retains his position for the next hole and again has an opportunity to win points.

But if the Chairman is beaten on that hole, he loses the Chairman title. If the person who beat the Chairman won the hole outright, that golfer now has the title. But remember: First you have to earn the title of Chairman, and only on the next hole do you have an opportunity to earn points by winning again.

Chairman, a k a In the Chair, is, therefore, a game that usually doesn't produce a lot of points being won.

There is an alternate way to play it that results in more points being at stake. In this alternate version, winning the title of Chairman does result in winning points from the other golfers. And then, if you win another hole while already Chairman, you win double from each of the others. If one of the competitors wins the title away from you, that golfer earns points — and then has the chance to earn double points by winning another hole as the Chairman.
