Biggest Wins in Fourball Matches at Solheim Cup

The largest winning margin in any fourball match at the Solheim Cup is 7-and-5. That score has been recorded twice. And it means that the winning side ended the match after just 13 holes.

Solheim Cup matches are all scheduled for 18 holes in length. A team that wins 7-and-5, however, has a 7-hole lead with just five holes left to play: They have clinched, and the match is over.

Fourball, as a reminder, refers to two golfers playing as partners, with the lower of the partners' scores on each hole counting as the team score. (If Partner A scores 5 on the first hole and Partner B scores 4, the team's score is 4.)

The Team USA sides of Pat Hurst/Rosie Jones, in the 1998 Solheim Cup, and Ally Ewing/Angel Yin, in the 2019 Solheim Cup, are the record-holders for largest margin of victory in Solheim Cup fourballs. Which means that the opponents they defeated are, alas, the record-holders for worst losses in Solheim fourballs.

Note that Yin and Laura Davies of Team Europe both were on two winning sides that make the list above.

Also note that all seven of the fourball matches with the biggest winning margins ended at the 13th hole, even though two of them had 7-and-5 scores and five of them had 6-and-5 scores. Why the different scores if they all ended at the same hole? In the case of the 6-and-5 scores, those winning sides led by five holes with six holes left to play, then won the 13th hole to win by six holes with five holes left (6 and 5). In the case of the 7-and-5 scores, those winning teams were dormie after the 12th hole — they led by six holes with six holes left to play. Then they won the 13th hole to win by seven holes with five holes left (7 and 5).
