Most Wins in the Women's British Open

What is the tournament record for victories in the Women's British Open? Three. There are two golfers who share the record for most wins in this major championship with three victories each.

The Women's British Open (officially known today as The Women's Open since the R&A took over running it) was first played in 1976. It has been counted as an LPGA Tour event since 1994. And it has counted as one of the major championships of women's professional golf since 2001.

Karrie Webb and Sherri Steinhauer share the tournament record with three wins each:

The List: Multiple Wins in Women's British Open

  • 3 wins — Karrie Webb, 1995, 1997, 2002
  • 3 wins — Sherri Steinhauer, 1998, 1999, 2006
  • 2 wins — Debbie Massey, 1980, 1981
  • 2 wins — Yani Tseng, 2010, 2011
  • 2 wins — Jiyai Shin, 2008, 2012
It's unusual for a tournament played since 1976 to produce only five multiple winners so far. And you might be surprised by Annika Sorenstam's absence from that list. She won the Women's British Open once (in 2003), but shares the tournament record for most second-place finishes with three.

Massey's wins in 1980-81 were the first back-to-back victories in this tournament. But the WBO was not called a major championship at that time. Nor was it for the first two of Webb's victories (1995, 1997), or the first two of Steinhauer's wins (1998, 1999).
