18-Hole Scoring Record in U.S. Senior Open

The United States Golf Association (USGA) has a reputation for creating very difficult golf course setups for its national championships. And there have been many U.S. Senior Opens where scoring was tough. But in this senior major, the USGA has sometimes made the host courses "gettable." That's evident from all the 62s and 63s that make up the list of lowest 18-hole scores in U.S. Senior Open history.

The first 63 was scored in the U.S. Senior Open in 2002, and the first 62 was carded in 2006. And that is where the 18-hole scoring record currently stands: 62. But multiple golfers now share that record. Five golfers so far have shot 62 in the U.S. Senior Open.

The List: Lowest Rounds in U.S. Senior Open

  • 62 — Loren Roberts, third round, Prairie Dunes Country Club, Hutchinson, Kansas, 2006
  • 62 — Kirk Triplett, first round, Salem Country Club, Peabody, Massachusetts, 2017
  • 62 — Brandt Jobe, third round, Salem Country Club, Peabody, Massachusetts, 2017
  • 62 — Steve Stricker, first round, The Warren Golf Club at Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, 2019
  • 62 — David Toms, first round, The Warren Golf Club at Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, 2019

  • 63 — Michael Allen, second round, Omaha (Neb.) Country Club, 2013
  • 63 — Kenny Perry, fourth round, Omaha (Neb.) Country Club, 2013

  • 63 — Richard Green, first round, Newport (R.I.) Country Club, 2024
  • 63 — Mark Hensby, second round, Newport (R.I.) Country Club, 2024
Of the five golfers who've scored 62, only one went on to win the tournament. Steve Stricker shot 62 in the first round of the 2019 U.S. Senior Open, then rolled to a six-stroke victory. David Toms, who also shot 62 in 2019, was one of the two runners-up to Stricker that year.

All five of the 62s happened on par-70 golf courses, making them all 8-under in relation to par.

Progression of the 18-Hole U.S. Senior Open Record

The U.S. Senior Open was first played in 1980, so that's the year our progression of the 18-hole scoring record begins. These are the golfers who first established each of the tournament's new 18-hole records, until the current one:

68 — William C. Campbell (a), 1980
65 — Miller Barber, 1982
64 — Orville Moody, 1989
63 — Don Pooley, 2002
62 — Loren Roberts, 2006
