What Happened in the 2008 U.S. Women's Open

Inbee Park won the 2008 U.S. Women's Open, and set a tournament record for youngest champion in the process. The 19-year-old Park was two strokes behind Stacy Lewis at the start of the final round, but shot 71 in that last round and won by four strokes.

Park was 19 years, 11 months, 17 days old on the day of her win. That made her the first golfer younger than 20 (Se Ri Pak, 1998 champion, was the previous record-holder) to win this major. Remarkably, at the 2021 U.S. Women's Open, Yuka Saso won at the exact same age, tying Park's record.

Lewis held the third-round lead at 210, with Paula Creamer one stroke behind, and Park and Helen Alfredsson tied for third at 212. But Lewis (78) and Creamer (78) both struggled in the final round.

Park, on the other hand, opened her final round by birdying each of the first two holes. She gave those strokes back before the turn, then had three birdies (including on the 18th) against one bogey on the back nine. Alfredsson fell out of contention with a stretch of five bogeys in 10 holes in the middle of her round.

This was Inbee Park's very first win on the LPGA Tour. She didn't win again on the LPGA until 2012, but then won so much she became eligible for the LPGA Hall of Fame in 2016.

Three-time U.S. Women's Open champ Annika Sorenstam tied for 24th in what was her final appearance in this major prior to retirement at the end of the year. (She did later, in her 50s, play the USWO again.)
