2011 U.S. Women's Open Winner and Scores

The 2011 U.S. Women's Open was the 66th time this tournament was played. It came down to a 3-hole playoff between two Korean golfers who were very fresh-faced on the LPGA Tour. The winner was so fresh she wasn't even yet an LPGA member.

Winner: So Yeon Ryu, 281

Where it was played: The Broadmoor (East Course) in Colorado Springs, Colorado

Tournament dates: July 7-11, 2011

Leader after first round: Stacy Lewis, 68

Leader after second round: Mika Miyazato, 137

Leaders after third round: Cristi Kerr, So Yeon Ryu, Angela Stanford, 212

What Happened at the 2011 U.S. Women's Open

It was 21-year-old So Yeon Ryu who claimed the championship over 25-year-old Hee Kyung Seo. Seo had one LPGA Tour victory to this point and was in her rookie LPGA season (she went on to win Rookie of the Year). Ryu had won six times on the Korean LPGA before this tournament, and winning here was her ticket to joining the LPGA (which she did in 2012).

The 2011 U.S. Women's Open was interrupted numerous times by weather delays and forced to a Monday finish. Seo, however, got her 72 holes done on Sunday, shooting 68-68 over the final two rounds and posting 3-under 281.

Ryu returned Monday morning to complete her final round. She forced the playoff with a terrific approach to six feet on the 72nd hole, and a birdie putt that fell into the center of the cup.

This was the first time the USGA used a 3-hole, aggregate-score playoff at the U.S. Women's Open, switching to that method from the previous 18-hole format. Ryu won the tournament on the second extra hole, scoring a birdie to Seo's bogey. Ryu shot 3-4-3 (10) in the playoff to Seo's 3-6-4 (13).

Cristie Kerr, the third-place finisher, was the only other golfer who finished the tournament under par. The tournament was played at Broadmoor East, which was set up at 7,047 yards in length. It was the first golf course in U.S. Women's Open history to player longer than 7,000 yards.
