What Happened in the 2020 U.S. Women's Open

It was a chilly U.S. Women's Open in 2020, played in December due to rescheduling caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But the player who got hot late is the one who carried off the trophy.

A Lim Kim, a 25-year-old Korean playing in her very first major championship, birdied each of the final three holes. She started the final round tied for ninth place, five shots off the lead. But after firing a 67, the lowest score of the final round and tied for tournament low, she won by a stroke.

World No. 1 Jin Young Ko also closed strong with a 68 to climb into a tie for second place. The third-round leader, Hinako Shibuno, had a final-round 74 that dropped her into second, one stroke behind Kim. Amy Olson, the first-round leader, went into the final round one stroke off the lead. Playing less than 48 hours after the death of her father-in-law, Olson shot 72 and was the third golfer tied for second place.

Kim was the first U.S. Women's Open champion since Annika Sorenstam in 1995 to make a five-stroke comeback to win in the final round, and the first since Eun Hee Ji in 2009 to birdie the final hole to win by a single stroke.
