What Happened in the 2022 U.S. Women's Open

Minjee Lee of Australia broke a tournament scoring record in winning the 2022 U.S. Women's Open. Lee's winning total of 271 was one stroke lower than the previous 72-hole tournament record of 272 (held by Annika Sorenstam, 1996; Juli Inkster, 1999; and In Gee Chun, 2015). Her score in relation to par, 13-under, was second-best to this point in tournament history.

Lee opened with a first-round 67, three behind Mina Harigae's lead. But Lee posted a 66 in Round 2, good enough to tie Harigae atop the leaderboard. After a 67 in the third round, Lee was in the lead alone. Her 54-hole total of 200 was also a tournament record.

In the final round, Harigae played solid but could not mount a challenge, finishing four strokes behind after having started the final round three back. There were multiple holes in the early to middle parts of the round on which Lee appeared to be in danger of dropping shots, but she mostly scrambled and sank putts to save par. In the end, she had a final-round 71 to finish at 13-under 271.

The win was the eighth of her career on the LPGA Tour. It was also Lee's second win in a major championship after her victory in the 2021 Evian Championship.
