2021 U.S. Women's Open Winner and Scores

The 2021 U.S. Women's Open was the 76th time this major championship was played. The winner was the first golfer from her country to claim this title, and also tied, to the day, the tournament record for youngest winner.

Winner: Yuka Saso, 280

Where it was played: The Olympic Club (Lake Course) in San Francisco, California

Tournament dates: June 3-6, 2021

Leaders after first round: Mel Reid and Megha Ganne, 67

Leader after second round: Yuka Saso, 136

Leader after third round: Lexi Thompson, 296

What Happened at the 2021 U.S. Women's Open

Nineteen-year-old Yuka Saso of the Philippines became the first golfer from that country to win not just this tournament, but any of the major championships of women's professional golf. Her age, specifically, on the day she lifted the trophy was 19 years, 11 months and 17 days. That tied, exactly, the record for youngest U.S. Women's Open winner first set by Inbee Park in the 2008 U.S. Women's Open.

But Saso needed a playoff to get it done. Saso was the 36-hole leader, but trailed Lexi Thompson by one following the third round. Nasa Hataoka was six shots behind Thompson, five behind Saso, as the final round began.

And Saso began that final round terribly: She double-bogeyed the second hole and bogeyed No. 3. She trailed Thompson by five at that point. Thompson still held a five-stroke lead on the 10th hole, but played the back nine in 5-over and finished one off the winning score.

Saso steadied and Hataoka charged, Saso shooting 73 and Hataoka 68. At the end of 72 holes, they were tied at 280. In the 2-hole aggregate playoff, they matched fours on both holes. So the playoff continued into sudden death. On the next hole (the third overall), Saso won it with a birdie.
