2022 U.S. Open Golf Tournament Winner and Scores

The 2022 U.S. Open golf championship was the 122nd time this major championship of men's professional golf was played. The winner claimed the trophy on the same golf course where, nine years earlier, he won the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Winner: Matt Fitzpatrick, 274

Where it was played: The Country Club (composite course) in Brookline, Massachusetts

Tournament dates: June 16-19, 2022

Leader after first round: Adam Hadwin, 66

Leaders after second round: Collin Morikawa, Joel Dahmen, 135

Leaders after third round: Will Zalatoris, Matt Fitzpatrick, 206

Notable notes: Matt Fitzpatrick won the 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship played at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. In 2022, he returned to Brookline for the U.S. Open, and won again at The Country Club. Fitzpatrick became the 13th golfer to win both the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open titles, but just the second (after Jack Nicklaus) to win both those titles on the same golf course.

Fitzpatrick had a 70 in the second round, but 68s in his other three rounds. He finished at 6-under 274, one stroke better than runners-up Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris. Fitzpatrick and Zalatoris were the co-leaders after 54 holes. All three of those golfers were tight throughout the final round, Scheffler at one point holding a 2-stroke lead. But Scheffler bogeyed the 10th and 11th holes. Fitzpatrick birdied the 13th, and took his own 2-stroke lead with another birdie on the 15th hole.

On the final hole, Fitzpatrick hit a great approach shot out of a fairway bunker onto the green. (Fitzpatrick hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation in the final round.) When Zalatoris' birdie attempt slid just past the left side of the hole, Fitzpatrick was the champion.

Fitzpatrick had seven wins on the European Tour entering the 2022 U.S. Open, but this victory was his first on the PGA Tour.
