The 2016 U.S. Women's Open was the 71st time this major championship was played. The winner was Brittany Lang, who came from two off the lead in the final round to force a playoff with Anna Nordqvist, then won that playoff.

Winner: Brittany Lang, 282

Where it was played: CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, California

Tournament dates: July 7-10, 2016

Leader after first round: Mirim Lee, 64

Leader after second round: Sung-Hyun Park, 136

Leader after third round: Lydia Ko, 209

What Happened at the 2016 U.S. Women's Open

Brittany Lang was two behind third-round leader Lydia Ko at the start of the final round, and Anna Nordqvist was six back. But at the end of 72 holes, Lang and Nordqvist were tied.

Nordqvist first tied Lang for the lead (Ko struggled to a 75) when she eagled the 15th hole. Lang retook the lead with a birdie on the 16th, but gave it back with a bogey on the 17th. When both players parred the 72nd hole, they tied at 6-under 282.

That led to a three-hole, aggregate score playoff. And the playoff appeared tight, too, after both golfers made pars on the first two holes. But midway through their play of the third extra hole, they were informed that on the previous hole Nordqvist has committed a penalty by slightly moving sand in a bunker. Nordqvist was given a two-stroke penalty, which essentially ended the suspense.

Lang wound up winning the playoff — and her first major championship — by three strokes, 12 to 15.
