What Happened at the 2022 Masters Tournament
Scottie Scheffler stood over a short putt on the final green to close out the victory in the 2022 Masters ... and missed. Then he missed again. But it didn't matter, because when he teed off that 72nd hole of the tournament, Scheffler carried a five-stroke lead. He ended with a score of 10-under 278 and "just" a three-stroke win over runner-up Rory McIlroy, who closed with a 64, tying the tournament's final-round record.Scheffler's challenger for about two-thirds of the final round was Cameron Smith, who entered the last day in second place. After a birdie on the 11th hole, Smith pulled within three of Scheffler. But on the par-3 12th, Smith hit into water and wound up with a triple bogey. It was easy going for Scheffler after that.
For the first time since 2019, this Masters featured full attendance, and the Par-3 Contest was staged (Mike Weir, Mackenzie Hughes and Kevin Na won with 23s). The COVID-19 pandemic had canceled the Par-3 Contest in 2020 and 2021, and had eliminated fans in 2020 and limited them in 2021.
