Golfers Who Won on the PGA Tour and Champions Tour in the Same Year
How many times has a golfer won on the PGA Tour and Champions Tour in the same calendar year? And who did it first? The answer to the second question is: Raymond Floyd. As for the first question: Only three golfers have pulled off this feat.
The reason why it happens so rarely isn't hard to grasp. A golfer must reach age 50 before he can play on the Champions Tour. And golfers around that age very rarely win on the PGA Tour. But the following three golfers have managed to record this achievement.
PGA Tour & Champions Tour Wins in the Same Year
Raymond Floyd, 1992
The Hall-of-Famer Floyd was still a force on the PGA Tour as he closed in on his fifties. He was runner-up at the 1992 Masters at age 49, and finished 1992 ranked No. 14 in the world golf rankings.Floyd was 49 years old when he won the Doral Ryder Open. After turning 50 later that year, he earned his first Champions Tour victory at the GTE North Classic, thus becoming the first golfer ever to win on both tours in the same year.
Craig Stadler, 2003
Stadler (pictured above) joined the Champions Tour in 2003 after turning 50. And on July 13, Stadler closed out his first senior victory, a major championship no less, the Senior Players Championship. The following week, Stadler entered the PGA Tour's B.C. Open. And on July 20, he earned the victory in that event. So Stadler first won on the senior tour, and then on the PGA Tour, in back-to-back weeks. His PGA Tour win made him the first golfer age 50 or over to win on that tour in 28 years.
Fred Funk, 2007
Funk's year with dual wins on both tours was 2007, but he actually turned 50 and joined the Champions Tour in 2006. His first senior win was at the 2006 AT&T Championship in October. Then, in January of 2007, Funk got his second senior victory, the Turtle Bay Championship. A little less than a month later, Funk won the Mayakoba Golf Classic on the PGA Tour. He was just over 50 years, 8 months old at that point, which made him, at that time, the fifth-oldest PGA Tour winner ever.
