The U.S. Open Record for Most Wins, Plus All Multiple Champions

The record for most wins in the U.S. Open golf championship is four, and it is shared by four golfers. Two other golfers have won it twice each. And there are currently another 17 golfers with two wins in the U.S. Open.

The Record: 4 U.S. Open Wins

The four golfers who hold the tournament record for most victories, along with the years of their wins, are:
  • Willie Anderson: 1901, 1903, 1904, 1905
  • Bobby Jones: 1923, 1926, 1929, 1930
  • Ben Hogan: 1948, 1950, 1951, 1953
  • Jack Nicklaus: 1962, 1967, 1972, 1980
Willie Anderson's victories came in the tournament's first decade, and his final three were consecutive. He is the only golfer to win three U.S. Opens in a row. Jones and Nicklaus each finished second four times, as well, in U.S. Opens. Jones lost in two playoffs. Hogan had two runner-up finishes, including one loss in a playoff.

So far in the tournament's history, which dates to 1895, there have been 22 golfers who have won it more than once. In addition to the four-time winners listed above, these are the two golfers who won the U.S. Open three times:
  • Hale Irwin: 1974, 1979, 1990
  • Tiger Woods: 2000, 2002, 2008
And these are the 17 additional golfers who won the U.S. Open two times:

As noted above, four-time champ Willie Anderson is the only golfer to win three U.S. Opens consecutively, and was the first back-to-back winner. Of the other four-time winners, plus the three-time champs, Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan also recorded back-to-back wins. Other back-to-back winners in the U.S. Open are Johnny McDermott, Ralph Guldahl, Curtis Strange and Brooks Koepka.
