Team USA's sweep of the Day 1 foursomes was the fourth time in Ryder Cup history the Americans had swept a foursomes session. But it was the first time since the 1975 Ryder Cup, played at Laurel Valley Golf Club with the U.S. team captained by Arnold Palmer. Palmer died less than week before the 2016 Ryder Cup began. To honor him, Palmer's 1975 captain's bag sat on the first tee throughout the matches.
Despite his side's loss, Ryder Cup rookie Thomas Pieters compiled the best record of the match at 4-1-0.
