1995 Ryder Cup Winner, Match Scores, Player Records

The 1995 Ryder Cup was the 31st time this tournament was played. Following the Team Europe victory, the all-time standings were 23 wins for the United States, six wins for Europe, and two draws.

Final Score: Europe 14.5, United States 13.5

Dates Played: September 22-24, 1995

Golf Course: Oak Hill Country Club (East Course) in Pittsford, New York

Team Captains: Bernard Gallacher for Europe, Lanny Wadkins for the United States

Team Rosters:

  • Europe — Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer, Sam Torrance, Constantino Rocca, Seve Ballesteros, David Gilford, Mark James, Howard Clark, Per-Ulrik Johansson, Philip Walton, Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam
  • USA — Corey Pavin, Tom Lehman, Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson, Jay Haas, Jeff Maggert, Loren Roberts, Ben Crenshaw, Peter Jacobsen, Brad Faxon, Curtis Strange, Fred Couples
Match Notes: Team Europe won this Ryder Cup with a rally in the final-day singles that came down to unlikely hero Philip Walton just barely holding on.

Team USA held a 9-7 edge doing into singles. That meant the Americans needed only win five points (out of 12 available) to hold onto the Ryder Cup as the defending champion. Instead, Europe won 7.5 of the points. The Americans lost, even after Tom Lehman led off the singles session by beating Seve Ballesteros in Ballesteros' final playing appearance.

Although European stars Colin Montgomerie and Nick Faldo won their matches, Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam joined Ballesteros as losers. Instead, it was several of Team Europe's others players who came through.

Howard Clark won Game 2, beating Peter Jacobsen, 1-up, with the help of a hole-in-one. David Gilford claimed a 1-up win over Brad Faxon in Game 6. After Phil Mickelson — going 3-0-0 in his first Ryder Cup appearance — closed out a 2-and-1 win over Per-Ulrik Johansson in the final singles game, that put Team USA a half-point from holding the Cup with just one match still going.

That match was Walton vs. Jay Haas. Haas was 3-down with three holes to play, but won the 16th hole with a hole-out from a bunker, and the 17th hole with a par. Haas had to win the last hole to keep the Cup in American hands, but he hit a weak pop-up into trees off the tee and didn't do much better the rest of the hole.

Walton was able to two-putt for bogey to halve the hole and win the match 1-up, and Team Europe was the 1995 Ryder Cup winner.
