1991 Walker Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1991 Walker Cup was the 33rd time this competition took place. Following the United States team's victory, the all-time standings were 29 wins for Team USA, three wins for Team GB&I, one tie.

Final Score: United States 14, Great Britain & Ireland 10

Dates Played: September 5-6, 1991

Location: Portmarnock Golf Club in Dublin, Ireland

Team Captains: Jim Gabrielson for the United States, George Macgregor for Great Britain & Ireland

Team Rosters:

  • USA — Allen Doyle, David Duval, David Eger, Franklin Langham, Bob May, Phil Mickelson, Tom Scherrer, Jay Sigel, Mike Sposa, Mitch Voges
  • GB&I — Andrew Coltart, Gary Evans, Padraig Harrington, Garry Hay, Garth McGimpsey, Paul McGinley, James Milligan, Jim Payne, Liam White, Ricky Willison
Notes: Team USA returned to the winner's circle after suffering only its third-ever Walker Cup defeat in the 1989 Walker Cup. The American side raced out of the gate with a 4-0 win in the first foursomes session, and led 8-4 at the end of Day 1.

The teams were even on Day 2, each winning six of the available 12 points, so the final margin of victory for the USA remained four points. Team GB&I closed that gap to just one at one point. But in a key match, Padraig Harrington led David Eger, 2-up, at the turn, only to have Eger storm back to win 3-and-2. Bob May and Mitch Voges won the two following matches, meaning the Americans won the final three singles matches.
