1987 Walker Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1987 Walker Cup was the 31st time this competition took place. Following the United States victory, the all-time standings were 28 wins for Team USA, two wins for Team GB&I, one tie.

Final Score: United States 16.5, Great Britain & Ireland 7.5

Dates Played: May 27-28, 1987

Location: Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire, England

Team Captains: Fred Ridley for the United States, Geoffrey Marks for Great Britain & Ireland

Team Rosters:

  • USA — Buddy Alexander, Billy Andrade, Chris Kite, Bob Lewis, Bill Loeffler, Len Mattiace, Bill Mayfair, Brian Montgomery, Jay Sigel, Jim Sorenson
  • GB&I — David Carrick, David Curry, Robert Eggo, Paul Girvan, George Macgregor, Paul Mayo, John McHenry, Colin Montgomerie, Jeremy Robinson, Graeme Shaw
Notes: The 9-point margin of victory stands as the most lopsided win by Team USA in any Walker Cup played on Team GB&I's home turf. It was the eighth consecutive win for the American side, a streak dating to the 1973 Walker Cup — but one that ended two years later in the 1989 Walker Cup.

Bob Lewis, making the last of his four playing appearances for Team USA (he later captained the squad), earned the maximum four points with a 4-0-0 record. Billy Mayfair went 3-0-0.

Another member of Team USA was Brian Montgomery, who was 18 years, 7 months and 28 days old — the youngest Walker Cup player in Team USA history to this point (a record later broken).
