1965 Walker Cup Winner and Match Scores

In the 1965 Walker Cup, something happened that had happened only once before: Team GB&I didn't lose. But they also didn't win. This was the 20th time the Walker Cup was played. Following the tied final score, the all-time standings were 18 wins for Team USA, one win for Team GB&I, and one tie. As the defending champion, Team USA retained the Cup.

Final Score: United States 11, Great Britain & Ireland 11 (USA retains Cup)

Dates Played: September 3-4, 1965

Location: Baltimore Country Club (Five Farms Old Course) in Baltimore, Maryland

Team Captains: Joe Carr for Great Britain & Ireland, Johnny Fischer for the United States

Team Rosters:

  • GB&I — Michael Bonallack, Clive Clark, Gordon Clark, Rodney Roster, Michael Lunt, Sandy Saddler, Ronnie Shade, Peter Townsend
  • USA — Don Allen, Deane Beman, William C. Campbell, Dave Eichelberger, Downing Gray, John Mark Hopkins, Dale Morey, Billy Joe Patton, Ed Tutwiler, Ed Updegraff
Notes: For the first time in Walker Cup history, the tournament ended in a tie. And just as in the Ryder Cup, the tie goes to the defending champion, which meant that Team USA held the trophy for another two years.

The tie ended a 9-Cup winning streak for Team USA, one of two 9-cup win streaks the American side has had in the Walker Cup.

Team GB&I won the opening foursomes sessions and dominated the Day 1 singles session to lead, 8-3, at the end of Day 1. Team USA made up no ground in the Day 2 foursomes, but rallied in the final singles session, winning six of the eight matches to achieve the final tie score.

By the time of the final match on the course, though, it was actually GB&I that needed to rally for the tie. American John Mark Hopkins held a 1-up lead over Clive Clark going to the 18th hole. Hopkins halving or winning that hole meant Team USA would get the outright win. But Clark holed a 35-foot putt to win the hole and salvage the tie.

Billy Joe Patton played for Team USA for the fifth and final time. At the end of the 1965 Walker Cup, Patton held the overall Walker Cup record (since bettered) of 11 match victories.
