The 10-point margin of victory matched the largest in Walker Cup history from the period when a total of 12 matches were played (Team USA also won 11-1 in the 1928 Walker Cup). This was the last Walker Cup played with 12 matches; the competition expanded in 1963.

The American captain was Jack Westland, who won the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1952 on the same golf course, Seattle CC. At the time of this tournament, Westland was a member of Washington state's House of Representatives.
