1936 Walker Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1936 Walker Cup was the ninth time this competition was played. Following Team USA's win, the all-time standings were nine wins for the United States, zero wins for Team GB&I.

Final Score: United States 9, Great Britain & Ireland 0

Dates Played: September 2-3, 1936

Location: Pine Valley Golf Club in Clementon, New Jersey

Team Captains: William Tweddell for Great Britain & Ireland, Francis Ouimet for the United States

Team Rosters:

  • GB&I — Harry Bentley, Morton Dykes, Cecil Ewing, Alec Hill, John Langley, Percy Lucas, Jock McLean, Gordon Peters, Hector Thomson
  • USA — Albert Campbell, George Dunlap, Walter Emery, Johnny Fischer, Harry Givan, Johnny Goodman, Reynolds Smith, George Voigt, Ed White, Charlie Yates
Notes: For the first, and only, time in Walker Cup history, a team pitched a shutout: The United States held GB&I scoreless. However, that comes with an asterisk. GB&I did halve three matches. Under today's scoring rules, where each side gets a half-point in a halved match, the final score would be 10.5 to 1.5. (And, in fact, some places online, including Wikipedia, list that as the score of the 1936 Walker Cup.) However, under the rules in place at the time, in 1936, halves resulted in zero points to either side.

Although both captains were technically listed as playing captains, neither played a match. This was the first Walker Cup in which neither captain played.
