1932 Walker Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1932 Walker Cup was the seventh time this competition was played. Following Team USA's win, the all-time standings were seven wins for the United States, zero wins for Team GB&I.

Final Score: United States 8, Great Britain & Ireland 1

Dates Played: September 1-2, 1932

Location: The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts

Team Captains: Tony Torrance for Great Britain & Ireland, Francis Ouimet for the United States

Team Rosters:

  • GB&I — J.T. Bookless, John Burke, Leonard Crawley, John de Forest, Eric Fiddian, Rex Hartley, Lister Hartley, Eric McRuvie, Bill Stout, Tony Torrance (playing captain)
  • USA — George Dunlap, Billy Howell, Maurice McCarthy Jr., Don Moe, Gus Moreland, Charlie Seaver, Jess Sweetser, George Voigt, Jack Westland, Francis Ouimet (playing captain)
Notes: The playing captain for Team USA was Francis Ouimet, and the 1932 Walker Cup was played at the site where a 20-year-old Ouimet famously won the 1913 U.S. Open, The Country Club in Brookline. Ouimet won his doubles match, and halved his singles match against the opposing captain, Tony Torrance. This was the first of six consecutive Walker Cups in which Ouimet was the American captain.

British brothers Rex and Lister Hartley partnered one another in the foursomes (they lost). Charlie Seaver, on Team USA, was the father of future Baseball Hall of Fame member Tom Seaver.

Two oddities happened during the tournament: There was a total eclipse of the sun during play. And in his singles match — which he won to earn GB&I's only point — Donald Crawley hit an errant approach to the 18th green that missed the green entirely, but struck the Walker Cup trophy on the fly.
