1928 Walker Cup Winner and Match Scores
Final Score: United States 11, Great Britain & Ireland 1
Dates Played: August 30-31, 1928
Location: Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois
Team Captains: William Tweddell for Great Britain & Ireland; Bobby Jones for the United States
Team Rosters:
- GB&I — John Beck, Ronald Hardman, Charles Hezlet, William Hope, Archibald MacCallum, Noel Martin, Philip Perkins, Eustace Storey, Tony Torrance, William Tweddell (playing captain)
- USA — Chick Evans, Watts Gunn, Jimmy Johnston, Roland MacKenzie, Francis Ouimet, Jess Sweetser, George Von Elm, Bobby Jones (playing captain)
Jones beat Philip Perkins (a British Amateur Championship winner) by a 13-and-12 score, setting a record for singles margin of victory in the Walker Cup that still stands. And it's an unbreakable record, because today singles matches are only 18 holes; at the time, they were 36.
And Jones beat Perkins by an even bigger score, 14-and-13, a little later in the championship match of the U.S. Amateur. (Not Perkins' worst day, however: He was once taken hostage, used as a human shield and shot during a robbery.)
Tony Torrance was the only match winner for the GB&I. This was the first of three Walker Cups in which Torrance was the only GB&I player to win a singles match.
