1962 Curtis Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1962 Curtis Cup was the 12th time this tournament was played. Following the American side's dominating victory, the overall standings to this point in the tournament's history were eight wins for Team USA, two for GB&I, and two ties.

Final Score: United States 8, Great Britain & Ireland 1

Dates Played: August 17-18, 1962

Location: Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colorado

Team Captains: Frances Stephens Smith for Team GB&I and Polly Riley for Team USA

Team Rosters:

  • GB&I — Angela Ward Bonallack, Sally Bonallack, Diane Robb Frearson, Ann Irvin, Ruth Porter, Jean Roberts, Marley Spearman, Sheila Vaughan
  • USA — Jean Ashley, Judy Bell, Clifford Ann Creed, JoAnne Gunderson, Ann Casey Johnstone, Barbara McIntire, Phyllis Preuss, Anne Quast
Notes: The Americans' 8-1 margin was the biggest win yet in this tournament, surpassing the 1950 Curtis Cup (whose final score was 7.5-1.5).

All matches were 36 holes, and there was a record set for largest margest of victory in a foursomes match in the Curtis Cup (a record that still stands today): the USA pair of Jean Ashley and Ann Casey Johnstone beat, by an 8-and-7 score, the GB&I duo of Diane Robb Frearson and Ruth Porter.

Frearson, however, was the only GB&I golfer to win a match, beating Judy Bell in singles.

The GB&I side also featured a pair of sisters-in-law: Sally Bonallack and Angela Ward Bonallack, who was married to Sally's brother Michael. Angela and Michael are the only husband-and-wife who've played in the Walker Cup and Curtis Cup; Sally and Michael were the first brother-sister pair to play in both the Curtis Cup and Walker Cup.
