1958 Curtis Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1958 Curtis Cup was the 10th time this competition was played between teams representing the United States and Great Britain & Ireland. Following the halved result here, the all-time standings were six wins for Team USA, two for GB&I, and two ties.

Final Score: Great Britain & Ireland 4.5, United States 4.5 (GB&I retained the Cup)

Dates Played: August 8-9, 1958

Location: Brae Burn Country Club in West Newton, Massachusetts

Team Captains: Daisy Ferguson for Team GB&I and Virginia Dennehy for Team USA

Team Rosters:

Notes: For the first time, the GB&I team retained the Curtis Cup. GB&I had only two wins in nine tries entering this year's competition, but they won the 1956 Curtis Cup. So by halving this one, GB&I kept its hold on the Cup.

Barbara Romack won the fifth singles game for Team USA, pushing the Americans to within a half-point of retaking the Cup. But when Frances Stephens Smith won the sixth and final singles match for GB&I, she gave her side the half-point it needed to keep the Cup.

There were some significant arrivals and departures at this Curtis Cup. For Team GB&I, Jessie Anderson Valentine played for the seventh and final time. At the time, she was the event's record-holder for most appearances as a player.

Today, one of the three golfers who have surpassed Valentine's seven playing appearances is Anne Quast, who debuted for Team USA — the first of her eight playing appearances — here in 1958.

Another debutante for Team USA was JoAnne Gunderson, who went on to an LPGA Hall of Fame career, better known by her married name, JoAnne Carner. And one more departure: Polly Riley, who, as an amateur won the first-ever LPGA tournament in 1950, made the last of her six playing appearances for Team USA.
