2004 Ryder Cup Match, Teams and Scores

The 2004 Ryder Cup was the 35th time the tournament was played, and it marked a low point to this point for Team USA in Ryder Cup history. The American captain's swagger and strategy bombed, and Europe claimed a big win on Team USA's home turf.

Final Score: Europe 18.5, United States 9.5

Dates Played: September 17-19, 2004

Golf Course: Oakland Hills Country Club (South Course) in Bloomfield Township, Michigan

Team Captains: Europe — Bernhard Langer; USA — Hal Sutton

Team Rosters

  • Europe: Paul Casey, Darren Clarke, Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, David Howell, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Thomas Levet, Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood
  • United States: Chad Campbell, Stewart Cink, Chris DiMarco, Fred Funk, Jim Furyk, Jay Haas, Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson, Kenny Perry, Chris Riley, David Toms, Tiger Woods
Match Notes: American captain Hal Sutton had a showy week prior to the beginning of play, putting on a cowboy hat and talking up his team's chances. He also decided to pair Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, declaring he felt that was four points for his side almost automatically.

It didn't work out that way. Woods and Mickelson, who were not friendly at the time and whose games were not good matches, especially for alternate shot, lost twice on Day 1 and were then split up.

But Team Europe already led 6.5 to 1.5 after Day 1, and things didn't get much better for Team USA. The Americans lost four the five sessions of play and never got closer than four points to the Europeans.

Woods wound up going 2-3-0 for the tournament, Mickelson 1-3-0. Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia were the big stars for the European side, each posting 4-0-1 records.
