Notable Notes: As he rode a train into St. Andrews, Sam Snead looked out a window and spotted something. "Say," Snead said, "that looks like an old, abandoned golf course." In fact, it was The Old Course, and several days later Snead won the Open on it. ... Sponsors and his friend Johnny Bulla talked Snead into playing (he played the Open only five times in his career, only twice in his prime). Snead wound up beating runners-up Bulla and Bobby Locke by one stroke. ... This was the first Open played since 1939 due to World War II.
