Following a one-year absence due to World War II, the PGA Championship returned — but it was the only major played in 1944. ... Many pros missed the tournament due to military service. Hamilton was in the military, but served his time as the pro at the Fort Lewis golf club. The tournament was played in nearby Spokane, Wash., so Hamilton was able to participate. ... To reach the final, Hamilton defeated Gene Kunes, Harry Bassler, Jug McSpaden and George Schneiter. ... This was the third PGA runner-up finish for Nelson, who also had two victories.
