What Happened in the 1914 Open Championship

One year after Harry Vardon lost in a playoff at the 1913 U.S. Open to amateur Francis Ouimet, Vardon won the 1914 British Open for what turned out to be his final major championship victory.

At the 1913 U.S. Open, Ouimet, a young, unknown American, knocked off two titans of British golf, Vardon and Ted Ray, in a playoff. But at this Open, Vardon won by three strokes over fellow "Great Triumvirate" member J.H. Taylor, while Ray finished tied for 10th and Ouimet was in 56th place.

This was the only year that Ouimet played the British Open, although he did make several more attempts at the British Amateur Championship in ensuing years.

For Vardon, it was his sixth victory in the Open Championship, a record for most wins in the tournament that still stands today. Only Jack Nicklaus has won another major as many times (Nicklaus won The Masters six times).

Vardon and Taylor battled throughout the tournament, with Vardon holding a 1-stroke edge at the halfway mark. Playing together over the final 36-hole day, Taylor took a 2-stroke lead into the final round.

But Taylor struggled to an 83 in that last 18, while Vardon managed a 78 to secure the victory. Vardon, Taylor and James Braid constituted the "Great Triumvirate" and won 16 Opens between them. But this was the last.

Vardon was over 44 years old at the time of the win. He remained the oldest Open winner in the 20th century until the victory by Roberto de Vicenzo at the 1967 British Open.

The 1914 British Open was the last Open played until 1920, as World War I interrupted life in Europe.
