Buick Open Golf Tournament on the PGA Tour

The Buick Open is a former tournament on the PGA Tour, played in Michigan for approximately 50 years, but ended when General Motors withdrew from sponsoring golf tournaments during the recession of 2009. The tournament had many big-name champions and in its later years was frequently won by Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh.

First played: 1958

Last played: 2009

Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods share the tournament record with three wins each. Woods' 2006 victory was win No. 6 in his 7-tournament PGA Tour win streak, the second-longest winning streak in PGA Tour history. Julius Boros, Tony Lema and Kenny Perry were two-time winners.

The 72-hole tournament record of 262 was recorded by Robert Wrenn in 1987. Wrenn won by seven strokes that year, which is also the tournament record for margin of victory.

In the 1987 Buick Open, Dewey Arnette reeled off eight consecutive birdies during a first-round 65. That tied the record at the time for consecutive birdies, and Arnette was the third golfer to do it on the PGA Tour. In 2001, Billy Mayfair scored 27 over the back nine, just the third golfer in PGA Tour history to score 27 for nine.

The tournament was discontinued in 1970 and wasn't played in 1971, either. It returned in 1972, but only as an unsanctioned tournament, not as a PGA Tour event (this is why the winner's list below skips from 1969 to 1977). It was played five times outside of any tour, and the winners in those five years (1972-1976) were Gary Groh, Wilf Homenuik, Bryan Abbott, Spike Kelley and Ed Sabo.

Also known as: Buick-Goodwrench Open and Buick Open Invitational
