Where it was played: Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England

Tournament dates: July 20-23, 2017

Leader after second round: Jordan Spieth, 134

Leader after third round: Jordan Spieth, 199

What Happened in the 2017 Open Championship

Jordan Spieth held or shared the lead each of the first three rounds, but started his final round with three bogeys in four holes. Following the front nine, Spieth and Matt Kuchar shared the lead. (Kuchar also shared the lead with Spieth following the first round, and was in second place behind Spieth following the second and third rounds.) Kuchar took the lead on the 13th after Spieth hit a wild tee shot, then had to take an unplayable and play from the practice area. Spieth still managed to save bogey, though, and a birdie on the 14th restored Spieth as co-leader. Then Spieth made a 48-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole to go back in front. He led by two strokes going to the final hole and won by three.

It was Spieth's third major championship victory and his second wire-to-wire win in a major after the 2015 Masters. All three of his wins in majors to this point were in different majors, making Spieth only the second golfer (after Jack Nicklaus) to win three legs of the career Grand Slam before age 24.

In the third round, Branden Grace shot 62 to move up into a tie for fifth place. It was first round of 62 in the history of men's majors and a new 18-hole British Open scoring record. Grace finished tied for sixth. Another 62 wasn't scored in a major until the 2023 U.S. Open.
