What Happened in the 2013 Solheim Cup
Europe scored not only its biggest win in the Solheim Cup to date at the 2013 tournament, but the biggest win by either side in the history of the event to this point, with an 8-point margin of victory. There were two important firsts for Europe at the 2013 Solheim Cup: This was Europe's first win in the United States; and it was the first time Europe won back-to-back (Europe won in 2011 by a score of 15-13).
Leading the way for Europe was Caroline Hedwall, who became the first player in tournament history to earn the maximum five points for her side. Hedwall's 5-0-0 record included a singles victory over Michelle Wie via birdie on the 18th hole. That point was Europe's 14th of the match, guaranteeing they would keep the Cup.
Hedwall was a captain's pick by Liselotte Neumann, who also chose 17-year-old Charley Hull, the youngest-ever Solheim Cup golfer to this point, who had been a pro for only several months going into the event. Hull went 2-1-0, beating Paula Creamer in singles by a 5-and-4 score.
Europe took a 3-1 lead in the opening foursomes session, and led by one point heading into the Day 2 fourball session. But Europe swept those four matches, taking a 5-point lead into singles. And there was another first during the foursomes: the first-ever Solheim Cup hole-in-one. It was made by Anna Nordqvist on the 17th hole during a foursomes matche with partner Hedwall against Morgan Pressel/Jessica Korda. The Europeans were 1-up at the time, so Nordqvist's ace won the match for them.
While Team USA had traditionally dominated singles at the Solheim Cup, it didn't this time. Europe won that session, too, 7.5 to 4.5, to produce the final 8-point margin of victory.
Brittany Lang (3-1-0) and Wie (2-2-0) were the only golfers to win more than one match for the American side.
