What Happened in the 2002 U.S. Open

Tiger Woods won his second U.S. Open tournament in wire-to-wire fashion. He led by one after the first round, by three after the second, by four after the third, and won by three strokes. For Woods, it was his eighth career win in a major and the 32nd win of his PGA Tour career. His 31st win was a couple months prior at the 2002 Masters, making Woods the first golfer since Jack Nicklaus in 1972 to win The Masters and U.S. Open in the same year. Woods opened with a 67. After 68 and 70 for his middle two rounds, he was 5-under and four strokes ahead of second-place Sergio Garcia. Phil Mickelson was another stroke back, tied for third place.

Mickelson revved up the crowd in the final round when he birdied No. 13, getting within two strokes of Woods' lead. But Woods then followed with a birdie there himself, and his lead was no less than three strokes the rest of the way. Woods closed with a final-round 72 for a 3-under total of 277.

Mickelson was the solo runner-up, his second second-place finish in a U.S. Open. He never won this major, eventually tallying a tournament-record six second-place U.S. Open finishes. Garcia shot 74 in the final round and finished in fourth place.

Six-time major champion Nick Faldo, who lost in a playoff at the 1988 U.S. Open, tied for fifth place. It was his last Top 10 finish in the U.S. Open, a major that he never won. Two-time major winner Greg Norman, who lost in a playoff at the 1984 U.S. Open, played the U.S. Open for the last time here and tied for 59th place.
