2001 U.S. Open Winner and Results

The 2001 U.S. Open was the 101st one played, and an 18-hole playoff was required to settle it.

Winner: Retief Goosen, 276

Where it was played: Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tournament dates: June 14-18, 2001

Leader after first round: Retief Goosen, 66

Leader after second round: Retief Goosen, J.L. Lewis and Mark Brooks, 136

Leader after third round: Stewart Cink and Retief Goosen, 205

Notable Notes: This is the tournament where Tiger Woods' run of four consecutive wins in majors ended. Retief Goosen was the winner in an 18-hole playoff over Mark Brooks. Goosen should have won in regulation, but missed a 2-foot par putt on the 72nd hole to fall into a tie (both Brooks and Goosen 3-putted the 72nd green). In the playoff, Goosen took a 3-stroke lead through nine holes and wound up winning by two strokes.
