What Happened at the 2000 Masters Tournament

When second-round contenders David Duval, Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson stumbled in the third round — scoring 74, 74 and 76, respectively — Vijay Singh's 70 propelled him into the lead. And that's where Singh stayed with a final-round 69.

It was the second victory in a major championship for Singh, who previously won the 1998 PGA Championship (and who later won the 2004 PGA Championship). It was the ninth of his 34 career victories on the PGA Tour.

Duval was the 36-hole leader, with Els, Mickelson and Singh tied for second one stroke behind. But following those third-round scores, Singh held a 3-stroke lead over second-place Duval.

In the final round, Duval got within a stroke of Singh after nine holes, but then faded on the back nine. Singh played a steady round of 69, led by two strokes after the 71st hole, and won by three over runner-up Els. Duval tied for third with Loren Roberts.

Sixty-year-old Jack Nicklaus, a 6-time Masters champ, tied for 54th place. It was the last time he made the cut in any of the four major championships. Tommy Aaron, 1973 Masters winner, also made his final cut in a major and finished 57th.
