What Happened in the 1988 Masters Tournament

Scotsman Sandy Lyle picked up his second major championship victory at the 1988 Masters, beating Mark Calcavecchia by one stroke. And that meant one thing to past winners of The Masters: Haggis would be on the menu at the 1989 Champions Dinner.

It turned out to be Lyle's final win on the PGA Tour, although he won four more times on the European Tour.

Lyle reached the 72nd hole tied with Calcavecchia at 6-under. A playoff appeared likely when Lyle's drive found the fairway bunker. But he hit a brilliant recovery shot, a 7-iron to within 10 feet of the cup. And then Lyle rolled in the downhill birdie putt for the win.

Lyle was the leader at the midway point, and carried the lead into the final round. But he hit into Rae's Creek in front of the 12th green in the final round (his ball hit the bank and rolled back down into the water) and made double-bogey. That dropped him into a tie, and Calcavecchia took the lead with a birdie on the 13th.

Calcavecchia parred out from there. But Lyle birdied the 16th to regain a tie for the lead, then birdied the 18th to win it.

Lyle was not only the first Scotsman to win The Masters, but the first British golfer to do so. And yes, the following year at Augusta National haggis (minced organ meats, suet and oatmeal cooked inside a sheep's stomach) was on the Champions Dinner menu.

Art Wall, the 1959 Masters champion, played the tournament for the final time this year, missing the cut.
