What Happened at the 1984 Masters Tournament
Ben Crenshaw passed by his college teammate Tom Kite in the final round, and beat 2-time champ Tom Watson by two strokes to win the 1984 Masters Tournament. It was the first of two Masters wins for Crenshaw, who also won in 1995. And it was his 10th career win on the PGA Tour.Crenshaw was the first-round leader with a 67. After a 72 in Round 2, he was tied for third. And he remained tied third with a 70 in the third round.
Crenshaw trailed his junior golf rival and college golf teammate Tom Kite by two strokes entering the final round. Mark Lye, the 36-hole leader, stood second, one behind Kite.
But Lye and Kite couldn't keep pace in the final round. Lye scored 74 and Kite 75, and they wound up in a group that finished tied for sixth place.
But Crenshaw birdied the second hole, then the eighth, ninth and 10th (and added two more later birdies) en route to a 68. Larry Nelson, who began the final round tied for seventh, got within one stroke of Crenshaw on the back nine before falling back to fifth. It was Tom Watson, Masters champ in 1977 and 1981, who finished second, two strokes behind Crenshaw. But Crenshaw's victory wasn't really that close — he led Watson by five after birdying No. 12.
A bit of lore about the 1984 Masters: When Crenshaw reached his ball in the fairway on No. 13 in the final round, he debated whether to go for the green (over water) in two, or lay up safe. He looked toward the gallery and saw Billy Joe Patton in the crowd. Patton was an amateur great who led the 1954 Masters in the final round until he hit into water going for the green in two on both Nos. 13 and 15. Crenshaw took his sighting of Patton as a sign to play it say. He laid up, and went on to the victory. The catch is that Patton was not in attendance at the 1984 Masters.
Fred Couples finished 10th, his first Top 10 finish in this major that he went on to win in 1991. And Larry Mize, winner of the 1987 Masters, tied for 11th in his Masters debut.
