What Happened in the 1980 Masters Tournament
The 23-year-old Seve Ballesteros won the first of his two Masters championships in 1980, the second of his eventual five victories in majors. He was the youngest winner in the Masters' history to this point, taking that record away from Jack Nicklaus. And he was the first European golfer to claim the Green Jacket.Ballesteros opened with a 66 in the first round to share the lead, had a 4-stroke lead at the midway point, and began the final round with a 7-shot advantage. By the time Ballesteros finished the front nine in the final round, his lead was at 10 strokes.
He struggled through Amen Corner, though, losing seven strokes to the field. Ballesteros hit balls into the water on both Nos. 12 and 13, and his lead dropped to three. But he regained his composure and started hitting great shots again, and birdied No. 15. He played solidly over the final three holes, and ended with the 4-stroke victory. The runners-up were Jack Newton and Gibby Gilbert.
Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer played the final round together, and Palmer got the better of the Bear, 69 to 73. Palmer, who made only two more Masters cuts after this, finished tied for 24th at age 50. Nicklaus, age 40, tied for 33rd, but he won both the U.S. Open and PGA Championship later in the year.
The 1980 Masters was the first major played by future major champion Hal Sutton. Playing as an amateur, Sutton made the cut and tied for 52nd place.
This was the last Masters played on bermudagrass greens. Augusta National installed bentgrass greens in time for the next Masters Tournament.
