1965 PGA Championship Winner and Scores

The 1965 PGA Championship was the 47th edition of this major, staged by the PGA of America. Dave Marr won the title over a pair of superstar runners-up.

Winner: Dave Marr, 280

Where it was played: Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania

Tournament dates: August 12-15, 1965

Leader after first round: Tommy Aaron, 66

Leader after second round: Tommy Aaron, 137

Leader after third round: Tommy Aaron and Dave Marr, 209

What Happened in the 1965 PGA Championship

The co-leaders after the third round were Tommy Aaron and Dave Marr. Aaron had not yet won on the PGA Tour, while Marr had just two victories. And Marr is the one who held his nerve in the final round. Aaron got off to a poor start and shot 40 on the front nine en route to a 78.

Marr played steady, if unspectacular, golf. On the final hole, after hitting a poor drive with a 2-stroke lead, Marr chose to lay up out of a bunker short of the green, which was fronted by water. He then pitched over the water and sank the putt, making par the hard way for a 71 and the trophy.

More impressive about Marr's victory was the pair of golfers who finished tied for second place, two strokes behind him: superstars Jack Nicklaus and Billy Casper. They began the final round tied for fourth place, two strokes behind, but couldn't make up any ground. Nicklaus and Casper, like Marr, carded 71s in the final round. Nicklaus won the PGA Championship five times, and this was the second of four times he finished runner-up in this major.

Marr won only three times total on the PGA Tour in his career, and this was the last of those wins. Marr's father was a PGA professional, and with this win Marr became the fourth son of a PGA pro to win the PGA Championship. (The first was Chick Harbert in 1954.) Aaron, who fell to eighth place, went on to win the 1973 Masters.

Fifty-three-year-old Ben Hogan finished tied for 15th in his final appearance in the PGA Championship. Jack Burke Jr., who won two majors including the 1956 PGA Championship, tied for eighth — his final Top 10 finish in any major. Another 2-time major winner (including the 1939 PGA Championship), Henry Picard, missed the cut in his final appearance in the PGA Championship.
