What Happened in the 1964 Masters Tournament

Arnold Palmer continued winning after 1964 — his final PGA Tour victory was in 1973 — and he challenged at majors again after the 1964 Masters. But this tournament marked not only Palmer's final win in The Masters, but his last victory in any of the four professional majors.

Palmer opened with three consecutive rounds in the 60s, building a comfortable lead. He shared the first-round lead, led by four strokes following Round 2, and by five after the third round.

With a final-round score of 70, Palmer's final winning margin over runners-up Dave Marr and Jack Nicklaus was six strokes. (For Nicklaus, the defending champ, it was the first of his tournament-record four runner-up finishes.)

This was Palmer's seventh win in a major, and his fourth victory in The Masters. The win made Palmer the first golfer in Masters history with four victories, breaking the previous record of three Masters championships he had shared with Jimmy Demaret and Sam Snead.

Craig Wood, the 1941 Masters winner, made his final start in the tournament but withdrew without completing the first round.
