What Happened at the 1962 PGA Championship

Gary Player held off a late challenge from Bob Goalby to win the first of his two titles at the PGA Championship. It was Player's third major victory to this point in this career.

Player began the final round with a two-stroke lead over second-place George Bayer and Bob McCallister. Goalby, four behind at the start of the day, birdied the 14th and 16th holes of the final round to get within one. But Player and Goalby both parred the final two holes, giving Player the one-stroke win at 2-under 278. Bayer wound up third, sharing it with a professional rookie — Jack Nicklaus. It was Nicklaus' first appearance in the PGA Championship, a major he went on to win a record-tying five times. (McCallister was not a factor in the final round.)

Player had already won the 1959 British Open and the 1961 Masters, making his win here the third leg of his career grand slam. He completed that slam when he won the 1965 U.S. Open.

Making his final appearance in a PGA — and his final cut in any major — was three-time major champion Cary Middlecoff. Middlecoff went out in style, finishing tied for 15th. His second-round 66 tied for low round of the tournament.
