Notable Notes: Bob Ferguson, winner of the three previous Opens, trailed Willie Fernie by three strokes following the morning 18. But Ferguson caught Fernie in the afternoon, and the two shared the lead at the end of the scheduled 36 holes on 158. ... They had a 36-hole playoff the next day, which Fernie won by a single stroke, shooting 81-77 (158) to Ferguson's 82-77 (159). ... Ferguson led by one going to the last hole, but Fernie hit his tee ball to four feet and made the putt. He won when Ferguson missed his putt and took four.
