What Happened in the 2007 Presidents Cup

The 2007 Presidents Cup is probably best remembered for Team USA member Woody Austin falling in the water. It happened on the second day of play during a fourball match; Austin, with David Toms, was facing Rory Sabbatini/Trevor Immelman. On the 14th hole Austin' drive found a water hazard, but the ball was close to the surface of the water. He decided to try to play it out of the water, standing on the embankment. Austin lost his balance during the swing and toppled over backwards into the water. And that particular match? It wound up as a halve.

Captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player served in that role for the third consecutive Presidents Cup (and Nicklaus for the fourth overall time). The United States victory was earned in two particular sessions. In the Day 1 foursomes, Team USA beat Team International 5.5 to 0.5. And in the Day 3 foursomes sessions, the U.S. swept all five available points. So the U.S. took a 7-point lead into the final day's singles matches, and won comfortably.
