1998 Presidents Cup Results, Rosters, Player Records
The 1998 Presidents Cup was the third one played, the first one played outside the United States. It was the first one won by Team International. It was the first one played by Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk. And the first one in which Jack Nicklaus served as a captain. Afterward, the overall standings in the event's history was USA 2, International 1.
Final Score: International 20.5, USA 11.5
Dates Played: Dec. 11-13, 1998
Location: Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australian
Team Captains: Jack Nicklaus (USA) and Peter Thomson (International)
Team Rosters:
- International — Stuart Appleby, Steve Elkington, Ernie Els, Carlos Franco, Shigeki Maruyama, Frank Nobilo, Greg Norman, Joe Ozaki, Craig Parry, Nick Price, Vijay Singh, Greg Turner.
- USA — Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Couples, David Duval, Jim Furyk, Scott Hoch, John Huston, Lee Janzen, Justin Leonard, Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson, Mark O'Meara, Tiger Woods.
This Presidents Cup took place in Australia, and the Aussies on Team International fared well: Greg Norman was 3-1-1 and Steve Elkington was unbeaten; Craig Parry went 3-1 and Stuart Appleby was 2-1-1. But the biggest star for the International side was Japan's Shigeki Maruyama, who went 5-0-0. Maruyama was the second golfer to go 5-0-0 in a Presidents Cup, the first to do it for Team International.
Not a single American player posted a winning record (although a couple were .500). John Huston was 0-4-0 and Duval went 0-4-1. It was a losing debut for Jack Nicklaus as Team USA captain. Nicklaus went on to captain four times, more than anyone else in the Presidents Cup.
