1996 Presidents Cup Results, Rosters and Player Records

What Happened in the 1996 Presidents Cup

The 1996 Presidents Cup was a tale of three days: On Day 1, Team USA dominated; on Day 2, Team International dominated; on the final day, the teams evenly split. The result was a squeaker of a win for the U.S. side.

Team USA dominated the opening fourball session, winning four of the five matches, and led 7.5 to 2.5 at the end of the day. On Day 2, it reversed: the Internationals won a session — the afternoon foursomes — by 4-1. So at the end of the second day the gap narrowed to a 1-point lead for USA.

And that's how it stayed after the 6-6 split in singles matches on Day 3. The U.S. secured the full point it needed for the outright win in the final singles match when Fred Couples defeated Vijay Singh, 2 and 1.

Mark O'Meara went 5-0-0 for Team USA (the first of a small group of golfers in tournament history to go 5-for-5) and David Duval 4-0-0. O'Meara and Duval partnered for three victories. Ernie Els, playing in his first Presidents Cup, lead Team International with a 3-1-1 record. Future American captain Steve Stricker also made his tournament debut here, going 2-3-0.

In one of the Sunday singles matches, David Frost of Team International defeated Kenny Perry of Team USA by a 7-and-6 score. That still shares the Presidents Cup record for biggest match win/match loss.
