1994 Presidents Cup: First One Goes to USA

The 1994 Presidents Cup was the first time this event was played. It was founded by the PGA Tour, which sought to replicate the success of the USA-vs.-Europe Ryder Cup (the Ryder Cup being run by the PGA of America and the European Tour). After the American victory, the overall standings in the event's history was USA 1, International 0.

Final Score: USA 20, International 12

Dates Played: Sept. 16-18, 1994

Location: Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia

Team Captains: David Graham (International) and Hale Irwin (USA)

Team Rosters:

  • International — Steve Elkington, Vijay Singh, Fulton Allem, David Frost, Nick Price, Bradley Hughes, Craig Parry, Robert Allenby, Frank Nobilo, Peter Senior, Tsukasa Watanabe, Mark McNulty.
  • USA — Fred Couples, Jim Gallagher Jr., Jay Haas, Scott Hoch, John Huston, Tom Lehman, Davis Love III, Jeff Maggert, Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin, Loren Roberts
Notes: The first-ever Presidents Cup set the tone for the early part of the competition's history: An easy Team USA win. It started with a 5-0 American sweep of the first session. And the U.S. finished strong, winning the singles session 8-4.

Fred Couples and Davis Love III were a combined 7-0-1 for Team USA, while Vijay Singh led the Internationals at 3-1-1. This is also where Phil Mickelson made his debut playing for Team USA as a pro (meaning in either the Presidents or Ryder cups). Mickelson, then 24 years old, was a 4-time PGA Tour winner at this point. He went 2-1-2.

Hale Irwin, the American captain, was also a playing member of the team. He was the only player-captain in the event's history until the 2019 Presidents Cup, when Tiger Woods pulled double duty.
