What Happened at the 1988 PGA Championship

When the 1988 PGA Championship started, Jeff Sluman had never won on the PGA Tour. When it ended, he was a major championship winner.

Sluman began the final round three strokes behind leader Paul Azinger, in third place. He ended the final round three strokes ahead of Azinger, in first place. Sluman did it with a closing round of 65, compared to Azinger's 71. That included a hole-out from 100 yards for an eagle on the par-5 5th hole during the final round. (Azinger made a hole-in-one in the third round.)

Azinger was the second- and third-round leader. Azinger and Sluman had been college teammates at Florida State University. The second-place golfer entering the final round, Dave Rummells, shot 75 and fell into a tie for sixth place.

For Sluman, it was his first career win on the PGA Tour. He didn't win again on the PGA Tour for nearly 10 years, until 1997, although he finished with six total PGA Tour victories.

Azinger had a number of close calls in majors, but he finally broke through for his lone major championship victory at the 1993 PGA Championship.
