What Happened in the 1914 U.S. Open
Walter Hagen made his first headline showing in the golf world, winning his first U.S. Open and the first of his eventual 11 major championships. Hagen won wire-to-wire, leading after each round of the tournament that was played over two days (36 holes per day) in the Chicago area.Hagen got off to a fast start, tying the U.S. Open 18-hole scoring record with a 68 in the first round. Hagen led Tom McNamara by one and defending champion, amateur Francis Ouimet, by three at the halfway mark. Those golfers were still 1-2-3 following the third round, with another amateur, Chick Evans, tied for fourth.
In the final round, McNamara (83) and Ouimet (78) fell away. But Hagen had to battle Evans down the stretch. Midlothian Country Club ended with a par-3, and Evans needed a birdie to tie Hagen. His tee ball was just off the green, and his chip shot came up short. Hagen had a 73 in the final round, Evans a 70, and Hagen won by a stroke, 290 to 291.
Hagen closed out the tournament with his own birdie. In fact, he birdied the 18th hole in all four rounds, the only golfer in U.S. Open history to do so. Evans went on to win the 1916 U.S. Open.
Johnny McDermott, winner of the 1911 and 1912 U.S. Opens, tied for ninth place in what his final appearance in the tournament. He was only 22 years old, but suffered mental health issues and spent most of the rest of his life in an institution.
